In 1976, a Nigerian soldier named Lt. Col. Buka Suka Dimka tried to overthrow the government in a coup. He and his fellow plotters managed to kill General Murtala Mohammed, the head of state. However, their plan failed, and Dimka had to run and hide.
After the coup failed, Dimka was on the run. The whole country was looking for him. He moved from place to place, trying to avoid capture. But Dimka had a weakness: he loved women and could not stay away from them, even when his life was in danger.
While hiding, Dimka made a big mistake. He decided to visit a girlfriend in a small town called Abakaliki. This was a dangerous and unwise decision because people in the town noticed him and reported his presence to the authorities. Despite being a skilled military man, Dimka’s desire to see his girlfriend made him take unnecessary risks.
The local people in Abakaliki recognized Dimka and informed the police. The authorities quickly moved to capture him. This happened on March 6, 1976, just a few weeks after the failed coup. Dimka’s need to be with a woman had led to his downfall. If he had stayed hidden and avoided contact with people, he might have escaped for a longer time.
After his arrest, Dimka was taken to trial. He was found guilty of planning and carrying out the coup that killed General Mohammed. On May 15, 1976, Dimka was executed by a firing squad. His capture and death showed how personal weaknesses can lead to serious consequences, even for someone involved in big political plans.
Dimka’s story teaches an important lesson. No matter how smart or powerful someone is, personal desires can cloud their judgment.
