Onions should be planted when the weather is cool. If you live in a cold climate, plant onions as soon as the ground is workable (when the soil can be smoothed), which could be in the late spring. However, Planting onion seeds can take longer, so germinate them indoors first to get the process started.

Below are steps to follow when planting your onions.

1. Prepare.

Fill a planting tray or other suitable container halfway with moist soil and dig furrows half an inch deep for your seedlings. Cover lightly with soil and keep the temperature warm, around 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

2. Transplantation.

When your onion seedlings germinate (which can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks), they are ready to be transplanted into your garden. For onion transplants, dig holes two inches deep and four to five inches apart, in rows 12 to 18 inches apart.

3. Companion plant.

Cabbage, tomatoes, leeks, and carrots are all excellent onion companions. Keep beneficial plants nearby to attract beneficial insects and other natural defenses.
