The first cultist group in Nigeria, the Pyrates confraternity started in the year 1952 at University College Ibadan.

Seven students (called magnificent seven) came together to form it. They are; Wole Soyinka, Ikpehare Aig-Imoukhuede, Sylvanus Egbuche, Pius Oleghe, Nathaniel Oyelola, Muyiwa Awe, Ralph Okpara. With Wole Soyinka the Capon Blood (the leader of the fraternity).
