China is a country located in East Asia and is the most populous country in the world with over 1.4 billion people. It has a rich history, with some of the earliest civilizations in the world, and is now the second-largest economy globally. It is a communist state with a single-party system of government and its capital is Beijing.
China is known for its Great Wall, Terracotta Army, and Silk Road, and is home to some of the world’s largest and fastest-growing cities, including Shanghai and Hong Kong. China has faced criticism for its human rights record and censorship, while at the same time playing a major role in world events, including the ongoing trade and technology competition with the US.
The yearly report to Congress focuses on Beijing’s quickly developing missile capabilities, China’s military development, and potential invasion preparations for the independent island of Taiwan, which is a US ally. China’s conventional prowess is expanding. Beijing now, however, also possesses what would be regarded as the most valuable military capability for a developing superpower: the capacity to send nuclear weapons almost anywhere on Earth (outside of South America, at least).
