The first formal school to exist in what is now modern-day Nigeria dates back to the early 16th century. However, it wasn’t until the 19th century that formal Western-style education gained more significant traction in Nigeria. British colonial rule played a pivotal role in the expansion of education. In 1843, the British established the CMS Grammar School in Lagos, which is often regarded as the first modern school in Nigeria. This marked the beginning of a more structured education system.
