Wavel Ramkalawan is a 63-year-old Seychellois Anglican priest and politician currently serving as the fifth president of Seychelles, is a small island country located in the Eastern part of Africa, since two years ago.

Born in Mahé, Seychelles, Ramkalawan was educated at Seychelles College, the elite boys’ school of the nation. He was ordained as a priest thirty seven years ago after his theological studies at St Paul’s Theological College, Mauritius, and thereafter underwent further studies in theology at Birmingham University, England. Moving back to his country of nativity, Seychelles, he served in several parishes in Seychelles, rising to become priest-in-charge of the parish of The Holy Saviour. It was his compellingly outstanding priestly work that culminated in his joining Seychelloi politics. Through his priestly work, he encounter various people who had been subject to repression and abuses of human and civil liberties by the government. At that time, the Catholic and Anglican churches were the only institutions that could speak on social issues.
