According to Daily Trust, the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, has summoned the Chief Judges of the Federal High Court and the Kano State High Court to address the issuance of conflicting interim injunctions that have thrown the Kano Emirate into a state of legal limbo.

The conflicting orders, which emerged from the two courts, have intensified uncertainties surrounding the leadership of the Kano Emirate, a historic and influential entity in Nigeria’s traditional and cultural landscape. The Federal High Court, led by Justice S. A. Amobeda, recently issued an order reinforcing the eviction of Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II from the Kofar Kudu Palace and explicitly supporting the authority of the 15th Emir of Kano, Aminu Ado Bayero. This decision was met with a protective injunction from the Kano State High Court under Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu, safeguarding Muhammadu Sanusi II and his associates from potential harassment by state authorities.

The summons by the CJN is a response to these judicial conflicts that have cast a shadow over the leadership dynamics within the Kano Emirate. Justice Ariwoola’s intervention aims to prevent further escalation and confusion by clarifying jurisdictional boundaries and ensuring that the judiciary speaks with one voice, especially in matters of significant public interest.

The legal community and the public have reacted with a mix of surprise and approval, recognizing the necessity of the CJN’s intervention in preserving the integrity of the judicial system.

Legal experts have emphasized the importance of judicial coordination and the avoidance of issuing orders that conflict with one andther, as it undermines the rule of law and the public’s trust in the legal process…………Séé Móré
