One of the most surprising and unsettling things Jesus said in the Bible is found in the book of Matthew. He said, “Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword” (Matthew 10:34).
This seems strange because we often think of Jesus as someone who brings peace and love. So why would he say he came to bring a sword? To understand, we need to look at what he said next. Jesus explained that following him could cause problems even within families. He said that his teachings could set “a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law” (Matthew 10:35-36).
Jesus didn’t mean that he wanted people to fight. Instead, he was warning that his message would make people choose sides. Following Jesus means making tough choices that might upset others, even close family members. His teachings were very different from what people were used to, and accepting them could lead to disagreements and divisions.
