Although it’s well accepted that issues with alcohol can have a severe impact on a soccer player’s career in South Africa, few players have opened out about their own issues. Former soccer player Phumulani Mkhize spoke up during the “wrong side of the road” campaign in Pimville, Soweto, about how drunkenness had destroyed his life.
Mkhize once teamed up with well-known athletes like Sibusiso Zuma and Siyabonga Nomvethe, but he now regrets the fact that he doesn’t have a house, a car, or a wife. He acknowledges that drinking had a bad impact on both his personal and professional lives. He feels that his current position may have been averted if he had acted more responsibly while he was actively playing.
Along with Mkhize, former Mamelodi Sundowns captain Hlompho Kekana, former Kaizer Chiefs star Junior Khanye, and current Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis attended the launch. Mkhize’s experience serves as a warning about the perils of alcohol misuse, especially for those who are in the public glare.
Soccer players should seek support and assistance if they are battling with addiction, as should everyone else. Others who may be going through similar problems can benefit from Mkhize’s courage in coming up about his hardships.
