Phila Ndwandwe was a strong woman who fought for the rights of people of color in South Africa during the apartheid era. She was a member of the ANC and later became an MK Soldier. Sadly, she was kidnapped by the white police of apartheid in 1988 and taken to Swaziland to be tortured and turned into a source for whites.

Phila Ndwandwe never gave in to the whites’ demands even after undergoing terrible torture. Her family was informed that she had disappeared to Tanzania, while she was only 10 kilometers away from them. Years later, her white killers asked for forgiveness for her brutal murder.

According to her killers, Phila Ndwandwe was beaten repeatedly and kept naked for ten days. When they realized that she would not betray her people, country, and friends, they blindfolded her and took her to a field where they shot her in the head while she was kneeling and blindfolded.

Phila Ndwandwe was a true example of how strong and fearless people of color are. Even when no one was around to support her, she stood her ground and never gave in. She was breastfeeding when she was kidnapped. This woman is a true model that shows that the fight against apartheid was not only done by men but women also played an equally important role in the struggle. She is a hero who fought till her last breath for the freedom of her people.

Phila Portia Ndwandwe is a recipient of the National Order of Luthuli, awarded to South Africans who made a significant contribution to the struggle for democracy, human rights, nation-building, justice, peace, and conflict resolution. Phila Ndwandwe’s bravery, determination, and unwavering commitment to the cause of freedom serve as an inspiration to people all over the world.
