Matt 17:12 “But I tell you, Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him everything they wished.”
Does Christians believe in reincarnation?
Reincarnation is the belief that once a person dies, his spirit begins a new life in a different body. It is also called rebirth.
In christianity, we are taught that once a person dies, he faces judgment to either go to heaven or hell. But the verse above refers to something different.
From Matt 17:12 Jesus was telling the people that Elijah they have been waiting for has already reincarnated in the person of John the Baptist, but they did not recognize him. Before Matt 17:12, he made it clear in Matthew 11:14, that John is Elijah.
Matthew 11:14 “and if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come.” This implies that John the Baptist is the reincarnation of Elijah.
