During an interview on Arise TV, Athan Achonu, the Labour Party Governorship Candidate in the 2023 election, shared his perspective on the potential benefits of having a woman president in Nigeria.
Achonu expressed his belief that women could be the solution to Nigeria’s ongoing challenges. He argued that the male-dominated leadership over the years has not yielded significant improvements for the country. He cited the example of Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, who made notable contributions as the finance minister. According to Achonu, her tenure demonstrated the positive impact women can have in leadership positions.
He further highlighted the integrity of Nnenna Oti, who is known for refusing electoral bribery. He suggested that this level of honesty and ethical behavior is what Nigeria needs in its leadership. He emphasized that women have shown their capability and integrity in various roles, which supports his argument for a female president. Achonu believes that women’s leadership could bring about much-needed change and progress in Nigeria.
