Albinos have very little or no melanin in their bodies, which can result in skin and hair that is very pale or white, and eyes that appear reddish or blue due to the underlying blood vessels. They are also at a higher risk for sunburn and skin cancer due to the lack of natural sun protection from melanin.
Albinos are also more likely to suffer from visual impairments such as nystagmus, photophobia, and astigmatism. These visual problems are caused by the lack of pigment in the iris and retina, which can lead to a reduced ability to see in bright light and poor depth perception.
Albinism is a rare condition and occurs in about 1 in 20,000 people worldwide. It affects people of all races and ethnicities. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern, which means that a person must inherit two copies of the mutated gene, one from each parent, to develop the disorder.
