Elder Sunday Oibe, the Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for the North-West Zone and the General Secretary for CAN in the 19 northern states, has spoken about the national anthem and what can create unity and peace in Nigeria.

In a report recently shared by The Sun, Elder Oibe said it is difficult for someone to get land and build a church in Maiduguri. He said it is also difficult for a person from Kogi State to successfully contest for local government positions in another state, such as Sokoto. He said these issues show that the real problem is not about singing the national anthem, but about accepting and respecting each other.

Elder Oibe blamed this division partly on the British colonial system, which he said created divisions among Nigerians. He said that reciting the national anthem, whether the new or old one, means nothing if people are not willing to accept and accommodate one another. He stressed that actions speak louder than words and that Nigeria will move forward only when people’s actions match their words of unity and peace.

In Elder Oibe’s words: “Will they allow you to have a land in Maiduguri and build your church? The answer is no. That is where the problem is. It is not the reciting and singing of the national anthem that is the problem….Fínd Óut Móre
