Veteran Nollywood actor Kanayo O. Kanayo recently made a statement that has sparked much discussion: “I don’t believe in one wife, it’s not our culture, it’s not who we are, these are imported practices.”
Kanayo is saying that having only one wife is not a part of traditional Nigerian culture. He believes that this idea of monogamy (one husband and one wife) was brought in from other cultures and is not originally African.
In many parts of Africa, including Nigeria, it was common for men to have more than one wife. This was a traditional practice that had many reasons behind it, such as showing wealth, having a big family, and ensuring help with work and family duties. Kanayo thinks that these traditions were disrupted when foreign cultures, especially from Western countries, brought in their own ways, including monogamy.
Kanayo’s opinion is causing some debate. Some people agree with him and think that African traditions should be preserved. They feel that the old ways were better suited to their culture and way of life.
However, many others disagree. They point out that today’s Nigerian society has changed. More people now see monogamy as a good practice because it supports equality between men and women.
