When many people think of visiting Abeokuta, they almost by default zero their attention to Olumo Rock only.
While the ancient rock complex is deserving of its popularity, there are several other attractions worth visiting, and some of them are described below:
1. Palace, Alake of Abeokuta: this palace is unique in the sense that it has a corridor decorated with several colourful wooden statues that tell the story of the town from as far back as the 1800s when the first traditional ruler was on the throne; this includes stories of past kings, law enforcement, the peasant population and important local practices. The palace where these statues are displayed is then first to be built in the premises. There are three others, and the king lives in the fourth palace. And one of the key attractions here is the oldest bible in Nigeria, which is in the private custody of the king.
2. National Museum, Idi-Aba: This museum is about 10 minutes drive away from the Alake’s palace. It has four galleries which shed light on the history of adire making in Abeokuta, the traditional form of governance in old Abeokuta, cash and food crops grown in the area and the the important contribution agriculture (especially cocoa farming) made to the economy and development of south-west in general. Visitors will also see a wide range of food variety on exhibit. The museum is housed in a building that served as a girls-only school in the early 1900s, which makes it all the more fascinating.
3. OOPL Zoo: The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library has become a major landmark in Abeokuta since it was opened some years ago. While it cost a lot (N6000/head) to tour the entire facility, visitors can visit the wildlife park section within the premises for just N500. It is an absolutely enjoyable experience. Elsewhere in the compound, there is also a kids playground with a variety of games.
4. Kuti Family Museum: Another recent addition to the tourist attractions in Abeokuta is the Kuti Family Museum, converted from the old stone house built by Reverend and Mrs Anikulapo-Kuti and where they lived with their children, including Fela Ransome-Kuti. Inside the one-storey building, visitors will see personal effects used by the family from the 1960s, including furniture, glassware, kitchen utensils and photographs. There is a video installation on the ground floor as well as typed descriptions that give an insights into the family life and achievements.
5. Adire Mall: Abeokuta is known for its indigenous craft of Adire making. It is an art practiced In many family compounds, which visitors can see if they are interested.
