United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has issued a stark warning about the dire consequences of the climate crisis, particularly for island nations at risk of disappearing under rising sea levels.

In a recent statement, Guterres highlighted the moral obscenity of allowing entire countries to become collateral damage in the pursuit of fossil fuel profits.

Guterres’ comments come amid a series of alarming climate events and scientific reports underscoring the urgent need for action. The World Meteorological Organization and the European Commission’s Copernicus Climate Change Service have confirmed that July 2023 was the hottest month ever recorded, with unprecedented heatwaves, floods, and wildfires around the globe.

The Secretary-General’s remarks echo his previous statements at the UN Climate Change Conference COP28, where he emphasized the necessity of phasing out fossil fuels to limit global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius and avoid the worst impacts of climate change. He has consistently called for immediate and dramatic climate action, criticizing the hesitancy and excuses that have characterized the global response thus far.

Guterres’ use of strong language, referring to the current situation as the “era of global boiling,” is a deliberate attempt to shake the international community into action. He has condemned the “unacceptable” level of fossil fuel profits and the lack of significant progress in reducing emissions, particularly by G20 countries responsible for 80% of global emissions.

The UN chief has also been vocal about the need for climate justice, recognizing that developing countries must be supported in their transition away from fossil fuels. His statements have highlighted the inequity of the climate crisis, where the poorest, who have contributed the least to global emissions, face the most severe consequences……..Séé Móré
