Islam is recognized as the second-largest religion in the world after Christianity, with about 1.8 billion Muslim people worldwide. Although it is recorded that, its roots go back further, scholars typically date the creation of Islam to the 7th century, making it the youngest of the major world religions.

Most historians believe that Islam as a religion originated in Mecca and Medina at the start of the 7th century CE. However, Muslims regard Islam as a return to the original faith of the prophets, such as Adam, Abraham, Moses, David, Solomon, and Jesus. Islam means “submission to the will of God.”
Furthermore, according to Islamic tradition, in 610 CE, Prophet Muhammad began receiving what Muslims consider to be divine revelations, “calling for submission to the one God.” Muhammad’s message won over a handful of followers and was met with increasing opposition from Meccan notables (persecution of Muslims by Meccans).
According to tradition, the Islamic prophet Muhammad was born in Mecca around the year 570. His family belonged to the Quraysh (mercantile Arab tribal confederation that historically inhabited and controlled the city of Mecca and its Ka’ba) which was the chief tribe of Mecca and a dominant force in western Arabia.

Some important Islamic holy places include the Kaaba shrine in Mecca, the Al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem, and the Prophet Muhammad’s mosque in Medina. The Quran or Koran is the major holy text of Islam.
